Remember Last Year’s April Fool’s Collector Car Tax Prank? What’s In Store For This Year?

Shelby American Automobile Club

The Shelby American Automobile Club caused quite a stir last year with an April Fool’s prank that some claim went too far. In the club’s spring newsletter, which is emailed to every member of the club, there were many fake articles and stories, but the biggest one concerned a collector car tax.

The hoax stated,  “Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) held a press conference today in the Capitol’s rotunda and stated that he is in the process of drafting a bill that will create a federal tax on all collector, antique, historic, special interest, hot rods and race cars.” Almost as soon as the emailed newsletter had been sent out, angry emails, tweets, and Facebook posts from antique car collectors around the country began showing up on nearly every classic car forum as well as Senator Schumer’s office. If you would like to read the original April Fool’s newsletter, click here.

Rick Kopec, the author of the April Fool’s piece, later released a statement about the joke. “We never envisioned that this one could spread so quickly or so widely beyond the Shelby American Automobile Club. We deeply regret if taking this story seriously has caused anyone any undue distress or embarrassment.” What do you think the Shelby American Automobile Club will do this year?

At Classic Auto Insurance, we don’t joke around when it comes to the security and protection of your antique cars and other vintage vehicles. High Gas Prices Keeping Your Antique Car in Storage?

High gas prices

With the cost of gas either at or rising above $4/gallon, classic car owners may find themselves keeping their vintage vehicles in storage more often than in years past. Since classic hot rods and muscle cars aren’t exactly known for their fuel-saving features, hybrid and electric car technology won’t help much here. The US Department of Energy has some driving tips, however, that can help you make the most out of every precious drop of gas you put into your prized collector car. You can visit their site here.

Maximize your fuel economy with these recommendations:

Drive more efficiently. Avoid bad driving habits such as speeding, aggressive driving, and rapid acceleration/braking. Observe the speed limit since gas mileage usually decreases at speeds over 60 mph. Use cruise control and overdrive to maintain speed and reduce engine wear. Remove excess weight from your car and avoid idling when possible.

Keep your car well maintained. Perform regular vehicle maintenance such as changing spark plugs to with fuel economy and keep your car running. Inflate tires to vehicle manufacturer specifications to improve gas mileage by up to 3.3% as well as help your tires last longer. Use the correct grade of motor oil for your engine and look for “Energy Conserving” on the API performance label.

Regular maintenance and careful driving are two areas in which classic car enthusiasts typically excel. Because of this, Classic Auto Insurance can offer low rates to our vintage vehicle owners. With savings on classic car insurance and fuel, you can afford to take your favorite antique car out for those Sunday drives and maybe hit a few car shows, too!

Understand Usage Restrictions on Your Policy

Your classic car requires great amount of care because its parts have already been subjected to huge amount of wear and tear throughout its lifetime.  Because it's hard to find parts for vintage cars, classic car owners must make sure their cars are always in good condition. You also need to get the right insurance coverage for your car to make sure your finances are covered when your vehicle needs to be repaired.

It is not advisable to settle for standard auto insurance for your vintage car. On first glance, standard auto insurance may seem like a good choice as most of these insurance companies would offer you lower rates. However, standard car insurance will not be able to cater to the needs of your classic car. You can’t be assured of getting the coverage that you need.

American classic insurance is different from standard auto insurance in terms of the restrictions and coverage provided by vintage vehicle insurance companies. Before signing for any type of insurance, you may want to look at usage restrictions included in the contract and see if they are appropriate for you. Some classic vehicle owners do not often use their cars for everyday driving, others only use their cars for car shows. Make sure that the contract you are signing provides fair restrictions for your car.

The best way to get the right car insurance for your vintage car is to weigh your options carefully. Get your car insured through a classic insurance agency that gives you fair usage restrictions and reasonable value for your car. Get a quote from Classic Car Ins today.
