We had the opportunity to check out the insanely fast Chevrolet Corvette Z06 at Elite Autos in Jonesboro, AR recently. It does not disappoint.
Not Your Granddaddy’s Vette
To say that the Corvette Z06 is fast is a true understatement. From its début in 2014 at the Detroit Auto Show, this speedster has been putting the car world on notice. Tired of having the Corvette referred to as “an old man’s toy”, GM took steps to get the attention of a younger generation. They beefed up the look, turned up the power and even featured the Z06 in the popular video game, Gran Turismo. No mistake here, this isn’t your granddaddy’s Vette.
The Fastest Production Vette Ever Made!
With the lineage of the Corvette Stingray running through its veins, the Z06 is in a class by itself. It is the fastest production Vette ever made. With a top speed of 199 mph, the Z06 earns its nickname – “The Big Nasty” – outright. Clocking in a quarter mile sprint at 11.1 seconds, this American supercar can take on the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador and the Ferrari 488 GTB with no problem.
The Z06 – Racing is in its DNA
The Corvette Z06 has more in common with the 2015 LeMans-winning Chevy C7.R race car than it does the original Stingray. Both cars share chassis architecture, engine technologies and aerodynamic strategies, and more importantly, they’re wicked fast. This year, when a strictly production model Z06 is named the official pace car for the 2015 Indy 500 race, it is the 13th time a Corvette is selected. Normally, pace cars are “supersized” to maneuver the track. The only modifications made on the Z06 are the hyperbolic Indy graphics package and the safety strobe lights. Racing is in its DNA.
Awe Inspiring Driving Experience
This “Super” Corvette has a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine, which makes 650 hp and 650 lb/ft of torque. The lightweight (yet rigid) aluminum space frame along with composite floor panels and carbon fiber hood and roof help lower the car’s center of gravity. Wider wheels and tires provide more grip than the Stingray. The Z06’s wheel base is 10 inches longer than the Porsche 911. All of this makes for an awe inspiring driving experience.
How Will I Choose?
Chevy offers more choices on the Z06 than any other Corvette. You can opt for the Z07 Performance package that includes suspension modifications, carbon ceramic brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cups summer tires and larger carbon fiber spoilers. It pretty much goes without saying you can select from a variety of seat styles – standard or sport, featuring the body hugging side panels to hold you in place.
A Driving Mode to Fit Your Every Mood
The Z06 will even help you become a better driver. The seven-speed manual transmission comes with a synchronized down shift rev matching system for better, smoother shifting and handling. Soon you, too can be downshifting like a pro. The car also comes with a driving mode selector on the center console. The five settings (Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track) adjust everything from steering effort and throttle response to traction control, offering a driving style to fit your every mood.
