Road trips are a fun and affordable vacation for both groups and individuals. There’s something about being on the road that gives a sense of nostalgia and freedom that you can’t get elsewhere.

Whether you’re taking on the open road with friends, family, or you’re flying solo, space and comfort can make your road trip even more relaxing and enjoyable. It’s hard to find a vehicle that’s as roomy, comfortable, and cool as a classic station wagon. Classic station wagons offer travelers comfort and space while also providing an attractive design.

Here are a few classic station wagons you should consider for your next road trip:

Chrysler Town & Country

This timelessly stylish “woodie” wagon was produced from 1941 to 1988. It’s largely known for being the first station wagon with wooden doors and side panels. Although Chrysler first constructed this beauty with mahogany panels, they adopted fake wood paneling in the 1970s.

The original 1941 model came equipped with a Chrysler I6 or I8 engine and could fit up to nine passengers. By 1988, Chrysler reduced the spacious full-size vehicle to a mid-size K-body, fitting five passengers comfortably.

Ford Country Squire

Ford produced this acclaimed classic from 1950 to 1991. Like the Chrysler Town & Country, the Ford Country Squire features the classic woodgrain trim that makes classic station wagons look both homey and stylish.

Although Ford released many versions of this vehicle across its 40-year lifespan, perhaps the most notable model was the 1966 Ford Country Squire. The 1966 model offers a third-row option to maximize the number of passengers that you can transport. The different V8 engine options for this model have a horsepower range of 200 to 345.

Buick Estate Wagon

General Motors produced the Buick Estate Wagon for a span of almost 50 years, from 1941 to 1990. Many different iterations of the Buick Estate Wagon came out over the half-century, but perhaps the most iconic iteration was the 1949 Buick Estate Wagon, which included Roadmaster, Super, and Special models.

The more widely available third-generation Buick Estate Wagon was constructed from 1977 through 1990 and was also known as the Electra Estate or LeSabre Estate. The third-generation Buick Estate Wagon came with 4-speed automatic transmission along with three different possible engine types including, the Buick V8 (350 cubic inches, 5.7 liters), the Oldsmobile V8 (307 cubic inches, 5.0 liter), and the LF9 diesel V8 (350 cubic inches, 5.7 liters).

Pontiac Safari

Pontiac produced this timeless beauty from 1955 to 1989. The Safari had a great range of different styles and features across its almost 30-year run, but perhaps the most notable models from the Pontiac Safari were the Pontiac Grand Safari, produced from 1971 to 1978.

The Pontiac Grand Safaris were the largest station wagons that Pontiac built. Their wheelbase was 127 inches, and their length was 231.3 inches. These models were incredibly durable and weighed over 5,000 pounds!
