July is Women’s Motorcycle Month, a tribute to a rapidly growing segment of the motorcycle owner population. In a 2008 survey by the Motorcycle Industry Council, 23% of motorcycle owners were female, making up about 5.7 million of the 25 million American bike owners. For more statistics from the 2008 survey, see the MIC’s website.
Although the average person may view women riding motorcycles pillion-style behind a man or seated in a sidecar, solo women riders have been a part of motorcycling tradition since the very beginning. Harley Davidson pays tribute to several “female trailblazers” on their website, including

Avis & Effie Hotchkiss – Mother-daughter team to be first females to ride cross-country on a motorcycle in 1915.

Dorothy “Dot” Robinson” – The “First Lady of Motorcycling,” competed in endurance runs and was president of Motor Maids for 25 years.

Bessie Stringfield – The “Motorcycle Queen of Miami,” first African-American female to ride solo on a motorcycle cross-country.

Vivian Bales – The “Enthusiast Girl,” 1929 documented 5,000-mile road trip on her Harley-Davidson. Was the first motorcycle magazine cover girl.

Today’s women riders continue to prove that motorcycles are not just for the guys. Magazines, websites, competitions, events, and seminars abound geared at promoting and supporting female riders as they become more involved in the motorcycle industry. Whether it is restoring a vintage bike or riding across the country, women have shown that their enthusiasm, knowledge, and expertise go far beyond the duties of “cover girl.”
