Episode 24 – Rick shows us how to use a do-it-yourself powder coating on some of the 1953 Chevy 150 parts. Using a powder coating kit made by Eastwood, he starts off by sandblasting the parts he will be powder coating. When finished, the coating on the parts turns hard (almost hard as glass) and protects them from rusting. It’s a do-it-yourself project; once you’ve tried it out a couple of times, it’s not hard. It’s good to use and doesn’t need to be used on everything, just the car parts you prefer.

Rick Drewry: All right. Welcome back everybody to Project COVID-1953, our 1953 Chevy 150 project. A couple of things that I did, and I continue to do, is some powder coating on small items that I use. I’ve got a powder coating kit I’ve had for years. I got it from Eastwood a long time ago and it’s a do-it-yourself kit. Basically, you sandblast a part, get it down to the bare metal, clean it and then you’ll hang the part and put an electric charge to it. Which is part of the kit of the powder coating. Then, with an air gun with a cup underneath the powder, you blow the powder onto this part. The electric charge makes it stick to that part. When you’re done with that, you go, and you put it in the oven (an electric oven) and bake it for 30 to 40 minutes until it’s cured.
What happens is that powder melts and it turns into a real, almost as hard as glass, the coating around the whole part, and protects it from rust. It’s very hard to chip, very durable and it is very much heat resistant as well. It’s good for certain pieces. I don’t do it on everything but there are a lot of parts that I like to do it on. It’s good to use, keep that in mind. And it’s a do it yourselfer. Once you’ve done it a few times, it’s not that hard.
Stay tuned, there’s more to come and we’re still moving on this project.
