It is time to bid goodbye to winter coats, ignite your engines and get ready for the most exciting event of the year – the Road America Spring Vintage Event is just around the corner! This year’s event will be held on May 17 through 19.
Tucked between Green Bay and Milwaukee in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Road America is a legendary 4 mile circuit with 14 challenging turns. Elevation changes and a long front stretch facilitate speeds of nearly 200 mph! This track is known for “the kink”, a hairpin turn on the backside. The vast sprawling grounds of the track cover 640 acres, with grandstands along the track, permanent hillside seating, offer and full view seating facilities for more than 150,000 people.
There are 13 concession stands and both tent and RV camping sites are available for a nominal fee. Parking is allowed for spectators on the boundaries as well. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult, but their entrance fees are free. For tickets and further details, visit http://www.roadamerica.com/Races/RaceInformation.asp?id=239
The race began in 1955. Started by Cliff Tufte as the nation’s first private racing course, Road America has been one of the most attractive spots for racing fans the world over. These fans converge here year after year to savor the fast pace of the the landscape, the hair-splitting races and the beauty of the cars involved. The tantalizing park-like ambience, fantastic food and the wheel to wheel competition offer an experience that spectators are not likely to forget..
“Racers, fans and even the media have a fond affinity for Road America”, says George Bruggenthies, track president and general manager. “It has a special appeal like no place else, for many fans Road America was their first racing experience and now coming back every summer is a tradition. Plus you can't beat the appeal of Elkhart Lake, the surrounding scenery and the off-track hospitality that the local area provides. For racers, the track layout has remained unchanged since it was first built, and mastering its daunting twists and turns has become a formidable challenge for any driver.”
Classic car enthusiasts have much to look forward to:
Good news for Porsche lovers. SVRA has made a special announcement that there will be a 911 race as a part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Porsche 911 at the Road America.
Not to be left behind, another veteran that's going to whet its appetite for speed, is the Chevrolet Corvette which is celebrating its 60th year of production. The event will pay tribute to Chevrolet and its Corvettes, which have been racing at Road America since 1956 with Corvette champions like Tony DeLorenzo, Jim Jeffords, Dick Thompson, Jerry Thompson, John Greenwood, John Heinricy, and of course Ron Fellows and his Corvette Racing teammates.
Vintage British and German Race cars are also expected to show-off their magic.
