Episode 18 – Starting the Engine … or Not

Here's What's Next on Project C10

Episode 18 – When it’s time to start the engine for the first time, most of us think it’s all going to go like clockwork, right? Not so much. Rick Drewry and the Project C10 crew take us through how it usually goes during a first-time engine start-up - spitting, sputtering, backfires and all.

Episode 18 – Video Transcript

Rick Drewry: All right it's time boys. We're going to give it a shot, we've got everything wired up, keep our fingers crossed, we'll see what happens.

Action – The Project C10 crew turns the ignition and starts the engine

Rick: Oh yeah, yeah. Awesome, yes just how we planned it, right guys?
Crew Member #1: That's right.
Crew Member #2: First time.
Rick: First time, that's right. Cut.

Is That How You Think It Really Happened?

Rick: So, is that how you think it really happened? It didn't. What happened was, we had a couple of snafus. Nothing that was our own fault, but we had a defective or a bad part.

We had an issue with the intake manifold, the carburetor would not seat. When we first started it up it was backfiring, whining. It sounded like a blower motor. We didn't know what it was. We finally decided the noise was coming from the carburetor. It was actually sucking air underneath and the gas was acting like a reed valve, making a high pitched whine. So, we pulled the carburetor off. That's when we found the studs were pulling out and screwed up. There was no way to fix it.

I gave Holley a call because we absolutely love the sniper intake (sniper fabricated intake manifold) -the look of it and the design. I called them up, told them what happened but they sent us a new one. So, kudos to Holley taking care of us and they know that I'm a long-time customer and a lot of people are, but they did us right.

So, we go a new intake, identical to the other one, but maybe with a little bit of upgrade to it and we got it all running and put back together now. So now it runs like it does.
