Custom 1978 Dodge Magnum Takes 27 Years from Dream to Reality

The Real Deal

Jim, the owner of a custom 1978 Dodge Magnum, still finds it hard to believe the car is real, which is why he names it Mirrage. Find out why it took 27 years to make this dream design a reality in our interview. Could you wait that long to see your build completed? Tell us your restoration stories in the comments.

“I Never Thought I’d See It Done”

Showing his car in Detroit Autorama’s Cavalcade of Customs is a first for Jim. “Many folks mistakenly think it is a Chevy Monte Carlo,” he laughs. “I bought the Magnum in 1978 and held onto it.” Deciding to customize his car, Jim creates his ultimate design plan. He begins a 27-year-renovation that takes the car through four separate custom shops and many delays. “I never thought I’d see it done,” he says, “but I couldn’t give up on it.”

Custom Design Proud

Today, Jim proudly shows off the finished product. The car still has many of its original parts, including the 400-cubic inch V8 engine. The top is chopped by four inches and the roof is lengthened. The trunk is shortened and both doors are lowered. The only seams on the car are the two doors and hood. The Chrysler standard longitudinal torsion bar and front/rear sway bars get replaced and an air-ride suspension is added.

One-of-a-Kind Interior

From the two-toned handmade seats to the Tigerwood dash, this car’s interior is as unique as its exterior. The notched steering wheel (which looks surprisingly like the MOPAR M) allows the front seats to swivel completely around to face the back. There is no denying Jim’s Magnum is one-of-a-kind.

Hazards of Showing Classic Cars

Jim is learning the ups and downs of showing classic cars firsthand. “I showed the car a couple of times outside over the summer. At one of them, the wind blew a competitor’s tent across the top of my car and we had to repaint.” He has had no such problems at the Detroit event. “I have met some nice people and they love the car. It was a long road getting it done but I am proud of it.” Here’s to following your dream, Jim!

Custom 1941 Ford Truck Earns Great 8 Honors First Time Out

First Time at Autorama Brings Great 8 Honor

Everyone dreams of getting a custom classic car or truck into the Ridler Award Great 8 but few do it on the first attempt. That is what Gary and the team from One Off Rod & Custom in Middletown, DE did at the 2017 Detroit Autorama. Clearly, this is no beginner’s luck. The customized classic 1941 Ford F1 Truck is the product of hard work and creative design. We speak with the proud builder about this amazing truck’s path to success. What do you think of their build? Leave us a comment.

A Custom Transformation Takes Shape

Owner Ed Sears originally wants a daily driver but, as with most custom builds, plans change. Once the ideas start flowing, Ed and Gary realize the truck is destined for bigger things. They chop the top, lengthen the cab, stretch the doors and shorten the bed. The classic pickup gets a fully independent rear suspension and a Ford flathead engine under the hood. Gary decides to do the wiring old school with fuses and braided wire, all stashed beneath the seats. Their ideas begin to take shape.

Setting the Gold Standard

They paint the truck in a rich golden color called Brown Sugar. The team produces the subtle two-toned look by using a darker shade on the fenders and running board and a lighter tint on the body. The paint job is masterfully done. This classic pickup is christened The Gold Standard and it is easy to see why.

A Proud Builder with a Bright Future

Being one of the Great 8 finalists is a monumental achievement for someone just getting started in customizing. While Gary appreciates the honor, achieving his client’s goal was the best reward. “The most satisfying thing was seeing Mr. Sear’s face when he got the Great 8” Gary says. “It made me very proud of the work our team did”. Something tells us that Gary and his crew have a bright future ahead of them. We look forward to their next custom ride.

Custom 1955 Chevy 210 Wagon is a Champagne Dream Come True

1955 Chevy 210 Wagon - From Rat Rod to Shimmering Classic

When his wife says she wants a custom 1955 Chevy 210 Wagon to drive around town, like a good husband, Gary Ritchie delivers. Check out our interview with Gary at the 2017 Detroit Autorama. Hear how they take a former rat rod and turn it into a shimmering classic. Can you picture yourself cruising the neighborhood in this custom dream? Let us know in the comments.

The Nickname Says It All

“My wife sees the for-sale sign on this Orange rat rod wagon and has to have it” Gary says. With rust, nowhere in sight, he sets out to transform this diamond in the rough into her dream car. “Everyone wants to know if it is a Chevy Nomad” Gary laughs. “So, we call our car Notmad”. The nickname says it all. The Chevy 210 has many of the same features as the Bel-Air based model but it is not a Nomad. It is unique all by itself.

“It’s a Ball to Drive!”

The build begins with Bill Ritchie’s Automotive Services installing a new LT1 V8 engine from a 1995 Corvette. They add an L460 transmission to give the wagon a smooth ride. “It’s a ball to drive! We love it.” he says. The custom interior, complete with all the modern bells and whistles, is crafted by the folks at Ciadella Interiors in Tempe, AZ. With stellar paint and body work by the Boogie Man himself - Gary Zaborowski, it is evident Gary knows the way to a woman’s heart.

Champagne Dreams and Caviar Wishes

For the exterior, achieving a silvery shade of Champagne proves a challenge. “We looked for six months to find just the perfect one” Gary remembers. He finally got the look he was going for by pairing Silver Sand Metallic (a 2015 Mercury MKX color) with Wimbledon White (a Ford off-white hue from the 30s). The combination is timeless and elegant. Now, this former rat rod is a classic family wagon, evoking champagne dreams and caviar wishes for its proud owners.

A Custom 1949 C-10 Truck Joins the Great 8 at 2017 Detroit Autorama

Ridler Judges Take Notice

This year, a customized 1949 Chevy C-10 truck has Ridler Award judges taking note. Débuting at the 2017 Detroit Autorama, this gleaming pickup easily cruises into the Great 8 winner’s circle. We seize the opportunity to speak with the proud owner/builder of this fantastic truck, Robby Collvins of Collvins Collision and Customs in Mount Vernon, TX. This curvaceous pickup will leave you breathless, yes? Leave us a comment.

This Truck’s Got a Corvette Soul

With its Corvette C5 frame and LS engine, this pickup has the soul of a ’Vette. “Corvette makes a great chassis and this model has one of their best,” Robby says. “We widen the truck about five inches to make it fit.” The bed is a different story. “We wanted something with the look of the 50’s that wasn’t just a box stuck on the back.” They shape the quarter panels and bed from a 1955 Cadillac El Dorado.

Choosing the Right Paint for Easy Touch-ups

The unique color on this C-10 is called Burnt Cajun. Robby creates it with the folks from BASF. As most collectors know, show cars take a beating during transport, which is why you need a paint that is easy to fix. “This color is very forgiving and gives us the look we want,” the builder says. “Having the right paint allows you to repair a panel and have the judges not notice.”

Showing Classic Cars Team Effort

Robby knows all about the perils of transporting a show vehicle. Damage to the truck’s running board causes it to miss the 2016 event. “Everyone thinks building the cars is the hard part but there is so much more involved. From safely towing a vehicle to finding someone to cover your shop back home, participating in car shows is a team effort.” Bringing home a Great 8 Award makes the five years of tireless work well worth it for the Collvin team. Congratulations and thanks for sharing this great truck!
