No Matter the Direction – Fall Beauty Abounds
Before fall is over, take your classic for one last ride before parking it in the garage for the winter. No matter which direction you go, autumn's beauty is on display. Perhaps our list of breathtaking destinations will motivate you to hit the road and enjoy the explosion of colors. We also included our wish list of dream convertibles worthy of each leaf peeping spin. Let us know your favorite fall cruises and the cars you would drive in the comments. We look forward to reading them.
Rustic Charm and Autumn Colors in Brown Co., Indiana
State Road 46 is a 40-mile stretch of two-lane road that winds its way from Columbus, IN. to Bloomington, IN. It is the quintessential leaf-peeping jaunt complete with rustic churches, covered bridges and picturesque farmland. Now, picture yourself behind the wheel of a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder LWB with the top down and the fresh breeze chilling your skin. Pack a picnic lunch because you will not want this cruise to end.
A Blue Streak on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Referred to as America’s Favorite Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway winds 469 miles through awe-inspiring scenery in Tennessee and North Carolina. Enjoy panoramic seasonal colors from the end of September to mid-November. Straight from our classic convertible wish list, the 1967 427 Tri-Power Chevy Corvette may cause you to miss seeing the leaves. With a 560 hp power plant, it is the closest thing Chevy has to a racing engine in 1967. You will be a blue streak on the Blue Ridge Parkway in this Vette.
America’s First Wilderness
Twelve designated scenic byways make up America’s First Wilderness, Adirondacks, NY. With arteries winding through quaint farms and hamlets, these thoroughfares showcase some of the best leaf-peeping in the area. For these twisting, turning two-lane roads you need an extraordinary classic car with legendary handling. We choose the 1958 Porsche 356 Carrera Speedster because, who wouldn’t?
Slow Down and Enjoy the Show
From mid-August until Thanksgiving, Oregon’s Willamette Valley is awash in the warm sunset shades of orange and gold. With over 250 world-class wineries lining Hwy 126 along the McKenzie River, you may want to slow down and enjoy what this area has to offer. For the ultimate in classic comfort, we suggest sliding into the driver’s seat of a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. This rolling sofa on wheels is the perfect car to pull over, relax and enjoy the fireworks of fall color. Enjoy the show, folks.

1933 Ford Roadster Takes Top Prize at 2017 Detroit Autorama
Every year in Detroit, the judges for the coveted Ridler Award have the unenviable task of narrowing down hundreds of incredible cars into a field of contenders called the Great 8. At the 2017 Detroit Autorama, a one-of-a-kind custom 1933 Ford Roadster sweeps the top prize. Could you be a Great 8 judge? Check out our video overview and see if you could pick a winner. Let us know your choice in the comments.
Renaissance Roadster Raises the Bar
For Portland couple Nancy and Buddy Jordan, taking home the Ridler Award is a dream come true. The job of building this magnificent roadster from the ground up fell to Steve Frisbie and the team from Steve’s Auto Restorations. From the aluminum hand-formed body to the hand-crafted leather and cloth interior, this Ford is more work of art than garage build. Even its name, Renaissance Roadster, suggests the builder’s desire to create a masterpiece.
Candy Apple Red Custom Creation
The candy apple red roadster is the visionary work of designer Chris Ito. There is very little on this Ford that hasn’t been modified or tweaked. From the removable hardtop and the 1930’s Nash instrument panel to the big block Chevy 427 engine, this hotrod embodies a car enthusiast’s wish list. If you are going to customize a car, remember to use only your favorite parts!
The Great 8 Class of 2017
This year’s class includes three imaginatively different pickups, two creative takes on the classic Corvette, and three Fords so distinctively different, even Henry Ford himself might not recognize them. One of these Fords is a gray-blue 1930 Ford Model A Coupe called After-Thought. Obviously, this is a misnomer because the owner and builder put a great deal of hard work into their creation. With the Hemi engine positioned prominently up front, this coupe is ready to take on challengers.
An Honor to Be Among the Great 8
For any vehicle at the Detroit Autorama, being listed among the Great 8 is an incredible honor. It is recognition for the hard work, imagination and love we have for the automotive industry. The award, named for the early Autorama promoter Don Ridler, selects candidates based on their unique designs, ingenious engineering and flawless execution. We can always count on seeing exceptional custom cars and trucks each year in the Motor City.

Purple Passion and Then Some
For owner Bob Chiusano, building a custom split window 1963 Chevy Corvette is not only a passion, it’s the fulfillment of a childhood dream. He explains his unique design ideas in our video interview from the 2017 Detroit Autorama. How would you customize your dream car? Share your ideas in the comments.
A Purple Puzzle Car
“I call it my puzzle car,” Bob says. “The frame is from a 1965, the 327 motor is from a 1966 and the body is from a 1963 Corvette.” He does not limit his design ideas just to American made cars. Audi models inspire the flush windows and bucket seats while the upholstery stitching pays homage to Ferrari sports cars. Even the selection of the amazing purple paint is from a European car Bob sees in California. (Does anyone else have a craving for a grape Nehi?)
Design Decisions Take Time and Trust
This Vette may be called Split Second, yet every design decision takes time to plan. “I wanted everything to look seamless and flow together on the car,” Bob recalls. Putting a great team together is key to producing a killer custom car. The folks from Eddie’s Rod & Custom in Cedar Rapids, IA gets the nod to make Bob’s ideas happen. “I love these guys! I trust them completely and they didn’t disappoint.”
Just in Time
Bob and his team cut it close getting this beautiful Corvette ready to show. “We got here just in time to queue to enter the building,” he laughs. He is not alone. Hundreds of competitors work until the last minute getting their cars award ready. “A lot of people here are proud of their cars and rightly so,” Bob says. “We are just happy to be a part of this great show.”

Custom 1956 Chevy C3100 Truck Shines
If you observed a reddish-orange glow emanating from the floor of the 2017 Detroit Autorama, you are not alone. Upon further investigation, we discover this custom 1956 Chevy C3100 truck belonging to the proud owner, Jake Bigelow. We speak with him about the hard work that goes into it and how he feels about showing it for the first time. What is your best custom build story? Tell us in the comments.
Can’t Stop Tweaking It
This beautiful pickup’s build takes four long years. Builder Jeff Thomas and his team at J and B Custom Classics in Clio, MI just cannot let go. They continue to tweak things right up until the day before the show. “We are still working the bugs out,” Jake grins, knowing full well it is pretty close to perfect.
The Biggest Struggle – “Spending the Money!”
The truck is an amalgamation of a TCI frame, a Mustang front end and a Corvette LS1 drivetrain. Only the seat is original. “Getting the wrap-around back window in place was a challenge,” Jake says. “The first set of tires did not fit the frame so we had to buy another.” So, what is the biggest struggle of the build? “Spending the money!” (we all feel your pain!).
Sunset Orange Pearl – A Mesmerizing Color
What is Jake’s favorite thing about this pickup? “The color. I just love it.” he says. “It is Sunset Orange Pearl. It turned out great.” Chevrolet offered the color on the fourth generation Camaros. This medium orange shade with a gold sparkle effect looks a burnt reddish color from one direction and a soft Creamsicle hue from another. The result is mesmerizing, much like a tropical sunset.
The Simple Pleasures
Reflecting on his first time showing at the Detroit Autorama, Jake sums it up with a modest comment. “It is pretty nice.” You must admit a show this massive can be a little overwhelming, which is why Jake does not have to elaborate. Sometimes the simplest pleasures are all you need, like enjoying a beautiful sunset at the end of the day.
